本作由井上刚担任导演，与NHK四月播出的剧集《地震之后》共享故事框架，同时新增场景重新剪辑而成。该片基于村上春树短篇小说集《神的孩子全跳舞》中四则短篇，讲述关于丧失与重生的故事。描绘1995年阪神淡路大地震后，四个在不同时代与地域背负孤独生存之人的命运交织，最终与当下产生联结的历程。。约翰（史蒂夫·布西密 Steve Buscemi 饰）是一名坏运气的赌徒，在牌桌上屡战屡败之后，约翰终于读懂了失败带给他的箴言，那就是让他放弃赌博，找一份工作，踏踏实实的去做一个普通人。就这样，约翰在一家汽车保险公司里得到了一份毫无前途的工作，在应付日常的各种琐事的同时，约翰还要抵抗内心的魔鬼。 某日，约翰被上司派遣协助一位名叫维吉尔（罗曼尼·马尔可 Romany Malco 饰）的谎言辨别师，去调查一场诡异的车祸，这也许是约翰唯一一个能够升职的机会了。与此同时，约翰邂逅了名为吉尔（萨拉·丝沃曼 Sarah Silverman 饰）的女同事，两人之间的彼此消遣，竟然渐渐升级成为了爱情。。Rainer Kohlberger is prepared to go far when it comes to the physical experiences he evokes with his work.
