德川幕府统治下的江户时代，位于丰后的羽根藩内，青年武士檀野庄三郎（冈田准一 饰）和友人因为小事起了争执，继而拔刀伤及对方。家老中根兵右卫门（串田和美 饰）赦免他的死罪，转而命其监视住在城外小山村的武士户田秋谷（役所广司 饰）的动向。户田曾担任郡奉行，与家老是儿时好友。七年前他涉嫌和藩主的侧室（寺岛忍 饰）通奸而被问罪，由于秋谷一直负责撰写羽根藩家谱，因此藩主命其在十年内完成家谱的编写，并于完工之日切腹自杀。抱着种种疑惑，庄三郎见到了淡定自若的秋谷及其妻子织江（原田美枝子 饰）、女儿薰（堀北真希 饰）以及少年武士郁太郎（吉田晴登 饰）。相处的过程中，庄三郎渐渐被秋谷的人格所感染，他在调查七年前的事件时，则发现了一些被人刻意隐瞒的真相…… 本片根据作家叶室麟的作品《秋蜩》改编。。St. Jude Square is a neighborhood living in fear and despair. The dueling gangs of local kingpins Dash and Antuan terrorize the streets and the citizens live without a shred of hope... until mysterious stranger Ryan Hong (Cung Le) arrives in town. He begins to play one gang against the other using his unparalleled martial arts skills, and by calling on the teachings of his brilliant mentor Tiano (Jean-Claude Van Damme) to find the strength to battle back. However, just as he begins to bring the community under control, Hong is confronted by Mr. V, the town's ruthless and corrupt police chief.
