The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。1980年代，皖南山区。靠勤劳致富的冒富大叔（张雁 饰）最近被人频频“揩油”，内心很是不爽。公社李主任接连借了两次钱，亲家庆亮（仲星火 饰）也趁火打劫，编造借囗张嘴要钱，并唆使冒富报假案，谎称被人偷了钱。同村的冒尖户秋生（虞桂春 饰）看到冒富的遭遇，有钱不敢存银行，将钱偷偷埋在莱地里，却不料被人窃走。冒富由于报假案唯恐事发，央求民兵营长（方舟波 饰）不要再查，可干部们不答应。冒富发现庆亮用骗自己的钱卖票放电视赚钱，一气之下抢回了彩电。上级领导了解情况后，决心刹一刹“吃富户”的歪风，责令村社干部凡用各种借囗从冒尖户手中拿过钱的限期返还......。
